Collection Scope Levels by Subject

Collection levels help inform decisions about purchasing and

removing outdated materials from the collection.  

Our Collection Scope Levels are based on the Subject Grouping of the

North American Title Count, a standard created by the American Library Association

Collection Scopes are as follows:

None

No Collection in this Area

The subject is too specific or otherwise inapplicable to our curricula

Minimal

Collection is limited to a few Reference Materials

Subject supports or contextualizes more specific subjects

Basic

Collection serves Survey and intro Courses

Students are introduced to broad concepts

Study

Collection serves curricula towards a subject Diploma

Students learn established theories and broad knowledge base

Research

Collection supports Graduate Level research

 Students synthesize new ideas from others' work

Comprehensive

Collection supports High-level academic research

Includes extensive primary material
