Ancestry.com describes itself as the premier resource for family history online. According to this paid website, it has the most powerful and up-to-date Social Security Death Index on the Internet and it offers thousands of fully searchable databases containing information on hundreds of millions of individuals. 

Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites on the Internet
This is a great place to begin.  Its thousands of sites are arranged by categories for ease of access.

Genealogy.com
Describing itself as "The leading resource for family history", this commercial site will get you started on your family tree.  Included are a search engine and helpful links to aid beginners such as the Social Security Death Index.

Rootsweb
This is the oldest and largest genealogy site, which makes it a great starting place.  It has many sections, including listservs and  surname lists that enable you to locate others researching the same surnames.

USGenWeb Project
Using this site will give you volunteer-supplied information on a parish or county level for every state.

Cemeteries and Cemetery Records
This site describes itself as the leading genealogical resource for burial records and tombstone inscriptions. Here you will find online records from over 1,800 cemeteries all over the world as well as articles and genealogical search engines.

Find A Grave
This unusual site that has received awards for both the Yahoo Cool Site of the Day and Worst of the Web has indexes to graves by name and location as well as posthumous reunions of famous groupings.

Christine's Genealogy Website
This has a valuable collection of links about African-Americans.

Familyrecords.gov.uk
This new portal guides users to the primary UK family history sites and resources on the Web arranged by archive and topic.

Genealogy: Acadian & French-Canadian Style
Acadian and French-Canadian history as well as genealogy gives a helpful background for researchers.

Genealogy-Native
This site for Native Americans wishing to research their ancestry is authored by a Professional Accredited Genealogist and has links to information about the Cherokees, a page for queries, and a geographical list and maps of tribes.

German Genealogy
genealogy.net describes itself as the number one resource in German genealogy. From its homepage are links to emigration, symbols, surname databases by location, and regional resources.

Italian Genealogy Homepage
This colorful site has information that ranges from research conditions in Italy to Italian given names.

JewishGen: The Home of Jewish Genealogy
Here will be found Jewish researchers in addition to databases and special interest groups.

National Archives of Ireland
This is an excellent site for giving researchers an introduction to Irish records that they may be using. Subsections include Beginning a Search; Census returns; Tithe Applotment and Primary (Griffith) Valuation; and Wills and testamentary records.

UK and Ireland Genealogical Information Service (GENUKI)
Through this site will be found information on English and Irish counties.   It describes itself as a "virtual reference library " of genealogical reference information that is of particular relevance to the UK and Ireland.

American College of Heraldry
Wanting to bring some semblance of order into the American heraldic arena and to begin meeting the heraldic needs of the public in this country, this organization's site has many links and information about this fascinating area of genealogical research.

Heraldry on the Internet
According to its author, this site is designed to help you conduct heraldry research on the Internet.  There are links to surname lists as well as general discussions about coats of arms and crests.

Access to Archival Databases
Locate information about the National Archives' millions of records

American Family Immigration Center
Use this site from Ellis Island and the Mormon church to find arrival records for the 22 million immigrants who entered the port of New York from 1892 to 1924. The database includes 70 percent of all U.S. arrivals recorded during that period.

Family Search Internet Genealogy Service
Ancestors can be searched on this
Mormon Church database that has the world's largest family history library and can download a free program on which to display an individual's pedigree

Genealogy Portal
Provides access to personal sites, specific databases, and journal articles.

Missouri Historical Newspapers Project
Eleven Missouri newspapers covering different time periods are digitized here

United States Newspaper Program
State historical newspapers that have been preserved by newspaper title, date, and location.

This site includes a tutorial for a source available from the McNeese Library database page that lists materials owned around the country

Libraries

Allen County Public Library
With over 220,000 printed volumes related to genealogy, this library site in Fort Wayne, Indiana is an excellent place to search for those difficult-to-find items.

Clayton Library
This Houston branch describes itself as one of the best genealogical libraries in the United States.  One of the two buildings has family histories, while the other building houses census, county, state and federal records.

Connecticut Historical Society Library
This collection of more than 100,000 volumes and 3,000,000 manuscripts can be accessed through the Society's volunteer Research Service for individuals who wish to trace their Connecticut ancestors.

Connecticut State Library
Using this link will give you access to the state library's card catalog as well as information about primary records and historical sources you may wish to consult.

DAR Library
A library catalog makes this site very helpful in tracing ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War.  Its collection covers local history, genealogy, biographies and vital records.

Genealogical Resources at the Maine State Library
This library's resources include Acadian  and Huguenot records, specializing in the area covering Maine, Massachusetts,  and New Hampshire. It also has information on other northeastern states, Canada, and Great Britain.

Library of Congress
This site describes itself as one of the world's premier collections of U.S. and foreign genealogical and local historical publications. Information is given about training that is available as well as subject research guides.

Library of Virginia
This site has digitized rare and unique Virginia materials into an integrated, user-friendly electronic research environment that includes 2.2 million original documents, photographs, and maps, and produced more than 80 fully-searchable databases, indexes, and electronic finding aids.

Los Angeles Public Library
One of the largest collections of maps in the country is located here. There are also 350,000 photographs related to Los Angeles and more than 40,000 genealogical volumes.

Mid-Continent Public Library
This Independence, Missouri library's holdings are national in scope. Materials in its circulating collection can be obtained through inter-library loan.

Minnesota Historical Society
Indexes are available for birth and death certificates as well as to the library catalog

National Archives
Links are provided to finding aids, guides, and research tools for requesting records from the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. or to prepare for a visit to one of its facilities nationwide.

National Genealogical Society
Offers home study classes plus an interlibrary loan service

Nebraska State Historical Society
The Library/Archives Division of the Historical Society maintains a large collection of library, archival, and photographic materials that may be used in compiling family histories. Use this site to get details about each type of information.

New England Historic Genealogical Society
The oldest genealogical library in the nation housed in Boston, has a collection of over one million items, with an Enquiry Service available by mail, fax and e-mail to non-members.

New York Public Library
This publicly accessible and non-subscription genealogical collection has American History materials on a national, state, and local level.

Newberry Library
This independent research library in Chicago has over 17,000 genealogies including rare books covering gentry and  British nobility.

State Historical Society of Wisconsin
Stating that it possesses one of the largest genealogical collections in the country pertaining to all regions of North America, the Society's site has links to MadCat, an online catalog of the University of Wisconsin's library, and ArCat, an online catalog of the Society's archives.

Western Reserve Historical Society
This Ohio site specializes in areas east of the Mississippi River, particularly the history of Ohio.

Chalmette National Cemetery
This Louisiana link from the Civil War Center has links to both the Union and Confederate databases.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System
This National Park Service site is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War; a list of regiments in both the Union and Confederate Armies; a database of more than 230,000 African-American troops who served in the Civil War.

National Gravesite Locator
Locates more than 3 million records of veterans and dependents

Miscellaneous

Hamrick Software - U.S. Surname Distribution
Through this site a surname can be searched for the  years of 1850, 1880, 1920, and 1990, or all of them in sequence.  A map shows the population concentration by state.

Mayflower History
This page not only has a link to the Society of the Mayflower, but also has the full-text of Mayflower documents, historical information, material about related personages such as Squanto, and addresses for researchers.

Olive Tree Genealogy
Focus is on Dutch genealogy, but also includes military records and ship passenger lists.
