Biographical Sketch
Karl Ashburn was born on November 7, 1904 in Whitesboro, Texas. He received his
Bachelors Degree in Economics from Texas Christian University in 1926 and his
Masters Degree in 1934. He continued his studies at Duke University where he earned
a Ph.D. in economics, and went on to finish his post-doctoral studies at the University of
Chicago. He taught at numerous universities, including Texas Christian University,
Southern Methodist University, University of Dallas, Loyola University in New Orleans,
Baylor, Texas Tech, as well as McNeese State College. He was at McNeese from 1950-1958 and
earned the position of Dean of Commerce. While there he was on the Board of Editors of the
McNeese Review, served on the Schedule Committee, was chairman of the Catalog
Committee, and was also the FBLA faculty sponsor. He served as the McNeese representative
on the Louisiana Survey of Higher Education.
Dr. Ashburn was a prolific writer and economic theorist. He was editor of the Southwest
Social Science Quarterly, and also contributed to such publications as the Southwestern
Historical Quarterly and Social Digest. He belonged to numerous organizations,
serving as chairman of the resolutions committee for the Southwest Social Science
Association, as well as on the board of directors for the Louisiana Historical Society.
Ashburn served as aide to Governor Earl Long of Louisiana, earning the rank of Admiral. He
was also an aide to Governor A. B. Chandler of Kentucky in 1958, earning the rank of
Colonel.
Karl Ashburn was married to Sarah Lucille Tipton on January 7, 1933. They had four
daughters, Carol, Mary, Becky, and Travis. Ashburn spent his final years in Plano, Texas,
where he taught at the University of Plano. He died on July 21, 1974 and is buried in Lake
Charles.

The collection consists of 3 boxes and includes speeches written by Dr. Ashburn, course
materials, news articles, numerous publications, photographs, a family scrapbook, and his
manuscript of The Changing South from 1962.
