Historical Sketch

The Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society began in 1973 with the purpose of preserving historic buildings, objects, and places relating to the history of Louisiana and Calcasieu Parish. In 1985, the Society began designating local buildings and residences as landmarks according to established guidelines. In 1990, the Society established the Charpentier Historic District in Lake Charles, a National Register Historic District. The Society remains active in local preservation activities.

Scope and Content Note

The Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society Records consist of four series: Series I. General Records, 1940; 1965-2004; Series II. Landmarks Committee Records, 1984-1998; Series III. Individual Landmark Sites, 1986-2003; and Series IV. Architectural Drawings, 1910-1928. The General Records Series contains the records of the Society, including the by-laws and constitution and information about historic sites not designated as landmarks. The Landmarks Committee Records Series contains the records of the Landmarks Committee and the Landmarks Review Board, the entities that determine which buildings will be designated as landmarks. The Individual Landmark Sites Series contains the application, photographs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings for each landmark, arranged chronologically. The Architectural Drawings Series contains the original drawings for the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse, the Calcasieu Marine National Bank, and the Charleston Hotel.
