The Diggers and Weeders Garden Club is a member of the Calcasieu Council of Federated Garden Clubs - District VII, the Deep South Region, and The National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. It holds meetings on the second Monday of the month at members’ homes. The Club’s aim is to promote a greater interest in gardening, conservation, beautification, and flower arranging. The Club flower is the iris; the color blue; and the motto “Work and Grow.” The Club first began in Lake Charles in 1954 with Mrs. J. H. Pickens as the first president and continues to the present.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains material related the Arbor Day, Conservation, Horticulture, and other Awards won by the Club from 1981 – 2003 in addition to miscellaneous programs, reports, and correspondence. The collection also contains scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, photographs and other memorabilia.
