Collection Title: ANDRE DUBUS COLLECTION Accession Number: 008 Biographical Sketch Andre Dubus was born in 1936 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was educated at the Cathedral School in Lafayette and graduated from McNeese State College in 1958. Dubus spent five years in the Marine Corps and then went on to attend the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa. He was instructed there by such famous writers as Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Yates. His first novel, The Lieutenant, was published in 1967. However, the focus of his writing became the short story. Dubus settled in Haverhill, Massachusettes and taught at Bradford College from 1966-1984. His stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies such as the New Yorker and The Carleton Miscellany. Some of his books include Separate Flights, Finding a Girl in America, and Adultery and Other Choices. Dubus life changed drastically in a 1986 accident. He had pulled over to help some people whose car had broken down, and was hit by an oncoming car. He lost one of his legs and the use of the other. Dubus, who had always prized an active and vigorous lifestyle, became confined to a wheel-chair. He then underwent a painful divorce and lost custody of his children. His new condition in life gave Dubus a new perspective for his writing, and in 1991 he published Broken Vessels. In this, his first non-fiction work, he reflects on the trauma of the accident and its aftermath. The book was runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in general non-fiction. Dubus was honored with many awards in his lifetime, including the prestigious MacArthur Award for his 1988 Collected Stories, and the PEN/Malamud Award. His last publication was a collection of essays entitled Meditations from a Moveable Chair. On February 24, 1999 Andre Dubus suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 62. He is generally considered as having been one of the greatest short story writers of his generation.
