Historical Sketch

Dr. Richard Gordon Holcombe, Jr. was born October 28, 1913 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  He attended Vanderbilt University and Tulane University, earning his B.S. in 1934 and his M.D. in 1937, both from Tulane.  In 1936, the Mayo Clinic selected Holcombe and six other students to attend a summer session on surgical pathology.  Holcombe began his military career in 1942 as a member of the surgical service of Tulane’s 24th General Hospital, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.  In 1943, Holcombe joined the Surgical Consultants Division of the Office of the Surgeon General.  In 1945, Holcombe returned to private practice in Lake Charles and married Odette Labadie.  The Holcombes had three children, Ann, Elizabeth, and Richard.  In 1966, Holcombe and Sam Marino, Head librarian for McNeese at the time, founded the Friends of the Library to perform volunteer work and donate materials to Frazar Memorial Library.  Dr. Holcombe has received numerous awards, including and honorary degree from McNeese in 1969, an affiliate of England’s Royal Society of Medicine in 1971, and the American College of Surgeons’ Distinguished Service Award in 1980.  In 1990, the Fellows Leadership Society of the American College of Surgeons named Dr. Holcombe an honorary lifetime member. Dr. Holcombe died on August 4, 2005.
