GUIDE TO COLLECTION Collection Title: Upsilon Conclave of Kappa Kappa Iota Accession Number: 136 UPSILON CONCLAVE OF KAPPA KAPPA IOTA COLLECTION Kappa Kappa Iota is a national sorority for teachers. This sorority was first organized on December 6, 1921, by a group of public school and college teachers in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The purpose of the order of Kappa Kappa Iota is to promote good fellowship and cooperation among teaching professionals. The Upsilon Conclave of Kappa Kappa Iota was the first teaching sorority established in Lake Charles. The organization of this conclave took place at the Majestic hotel in Lake Charles on February 15, 1958. The charter members of this organization were: Miss Frances Willard, Miss Lorena Roberts, Miss Mary Jane Gorham, Miss Kathleen Thornton, Miss Fern Hebert, Miss Bonnie Mae Smith, Miss Inez Schindler, Mrs. Kate Gibson, Mrs. Viva de Synek, Mrs. Jess Warner, Mrs. Ethel Glenn, Mrs. Ruth Johnson, Mrs. Clara Allen, and Mrs. Ethel Watkins.
