Historical Sketch

The Southwest Louisiana Historical Association began in 1952 as a joint effort between McNeese State University and a group of interested citizens. The mission of the organization is to encourage the study of history in Louisiana with particular emphasis on the history of southwest Louisiana. Since its inception, the Association has maintained a close relationship with MSU through collaborative projects, such as producing books, erecting historical markers, holding photo fairs, acquiring manuscripts, and participating in volunteer projects. The Association also includes the Gingham Ladies, a service group for women. The Gingham Ladies serve has hosts for civic and cultural events. The Association celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary in April, 2003, and continues to grow.
