The Archives & Special
Collections Department keeps materials concerning the history of McNeese State University
from its foundation in 1939 to the present. Many of these items may be found in Frazar
Memorial Librarys electronic holdings catalog. Other materials such as photographs
and files on university departments, organizations, and past events may be accessed with
the assistance of department attendants. These items may be found in the Library's online

Lether Edward Frazar Collection
The collection contains general and miscellaneous information about
Lether E. Frazar, dean of McNeese Junior College (1944-50), first president of McNeese
State College (1950-55), and lieutenant governor of Louisiana (1956-60). It also has
correspondence to and from Lether Frazar dating from 1935-59, scholarships issued from
1956-60, information about Louisiana schools and government, a wool hat, boxing gloves,
and photographs.

Memorial Library Collection
The collection contains annual reports from various departments in the library from
1953-1992, minutes of library staff meetings, and information and blueprints for library
construction and renovation.

Gordon Holcombe Jr. / Friends of the Library Collection
The collection contains scrapbooks, a diary, correspondence, membership lists, and
clippings about the Friends of the McNeese Library which Holcombe initiated. It also
contains tape recordings of presentations made by Dr. Holcombe to various organizations
and other miscellaneous information.

McNeese Collection
The collection contains various biographical articles and papers, copies of military
records, photographs, books, and miscellaneous documents concerning John McNeese, the
first superintendent of Calcasieu Parish public schools (1888-1913) and the man for whom
McNeese State University is named.

University/Academic Advisory (University Council, Deans' Council)
Collection
Agenda, containing mostly catalog curriculum changes, made
by the University Council from 1981-1989 and, after its name change
to the Advisory Council, from 1989-present.

This collection consists of information resources and
various items relating to all athletics on the McNeese State
University campus. It contains media guides, programs and film
footage of athletic events.

Contains four scrapbooks, covering the years 1966-1970.
Each scrapbooks contains newspaper clippings, photographs, letters,
articles, notes and cards.

Contains fifteen boxes of material on books written by Joe
Gray Taylor, including drafts, correspondence and book reviews. The
collection also contains publications of faculty in various
colleges.

reports, notes, etc. of the McNeese Faculty Senate (Council) from
its organization in 1973-1974 to the present.

papers, photographs and reports on the Panhellenic Council and
campus sororities dating from 1951-1954 and 1970-1993.

The collection contains newspaper clippings, a manual and
scrapbooks that consist of photographs, clippings and programs,
which pertain to the McNeese Beta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Chi Theta,
a co-ed professional business and economics fraternity.

University/60th Anniversary Oral History Collection
Contains oral history interviews with several of the first
students attending McNeese in 1939-1941, transcripts, current
photographs, copies of photographs from the yearbooks of the time
and from the photograph file.

Contains correspondence, other miscellaneous documents
concerning the use of the Chennault Air Force Base for the
university, purchase of various properties by McNeese, sale of
various properties by McNeese and construction and renovation of
buildings on the McNeese campus. Dates vary from early 1940s to the
1980s.

Contains material from productions held from 1969 to the
present, including photographs, playbills and reviews. also
contains information on Alpha Psi Omega, the dramatic fraternity.

J. Millet Collection
The collection contains addresses on historical subjects, photographs from the Lake
Charles vicinity, material related to the Seaman A. Knapp memorial on the McNeese campus,
correspondence, and biographical material on area citizens written and collected by former
McNeese history professor Donald J. Millet.
