Center for Applied Linguistics
CAL is a private, non-profit organization: a group of scholars and educators who use the findings of linguistics and related sciences in identifying and addressing language-related problems. CAL carries out a wide range of activities including research, teacher education, analysis and dissemination of information, design and development of instructional materials, technical assistance, conference planning, program evaluation, and policy analysis. Site includes job and internship listings, "Ask the Language Experts," ESL information, and pointers to other projects.

Ethnologue
Comprehensive linguistic catalog of 6,800 languages spoken around the world. Arranged by country, language family, name; searchable.

Global Language Monitor
The Global Language Monitor (GLM) documents, analyzes and tracks trends in language the world over, with a particular emphasis upon Global English. Worldwide print and electronic media have come to rely on The Global Language Monitor for its expert analysis on language trends and their subsequent impact on politics, culture and business, including the PQ Index/Indicator, analysis of media coverage of the 2004 Summer Olympics, the Republican National Convention, Workplace lingo, HollyWords, Telewords, the English Language Wordclock, among many others.

iLoveLanguages
Excellent index of sites relating to a wide variety of languages. Choose the "Languages" tab, then look for the language that interests you.

Live Radio Broadcasting on the Internet
Arranged by country of origin; notes about stations are in French, since this site is based in France.  NOTE: You will need RealPlayer or a similar plug-in to listen to the actual broadcasts; download links are provided.  See also the listing for "live Internet TV" at this site.

The Modern Language Association Map
The MLA Language Map uses data from the 2000 United States census to display the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages and three groups of less commonly spoken languages in the United States. Users can view an interactive map, compare languages and places, and access more detailed information.

Omniglot
This website provides a guide to over 160 different alphabets, syllabaries and other writing systems. It also contains details of many of the languages written with those writing systems and links to a wide range of language-related resources, such as fonts, online dictionaries and online language courses.

Bartleby.com
Provides an extensive database of general reference works in electronic format, such as dictionaries, thesauri, and style manuals. Includes nonfiction, fiction, reference, and verse works.

Grammar Girl
Grammar Girl produces short, regular podcasts illustrating the finer points of grammar.

Guide to Grammar and Writing
Very helpful basic introduction to English grammar, including sentences, parts of speech, and basic punctuation. Includes section on diagramming sentences.

History of the English Language
An excellent list of links and a discussion list about the History of English.

The Owl at Purdue
This site provides help for all aspects of the writing process, from research to grammar and style questions.

WWWebster Dictionary
Online version of the classic English dictionary. Includes etymology (word history) and a thesaurus.

World Wide Words
English-language site tracking the development of new English words and exploring odd or interesting English words and phrases.  The author is a researcher for the Oxford English Dictionary.

A must-see site covering all aspects of Francophone literature and culture. Includes extensive coverage of sites relating to French-speaking Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. (Text in French.)

France Diplomatie
Sponsored by France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this site features information about French history, politics, and culture. (Text in French; English, German, and Spanish versions available.)

French Collection from the University of Virginia

Le Monde
Online version of the French daily newspaper.

Nomade
Based in France, a Yahoo-style guide to Internet sites in French.

English as a Second Language

Dave's ESL Cafe
Resource for students and teachers. Offers more than 50 discussion forums, chat room, interactive exercises, online tutorials, and extensive web guide. Also provides resume board, teaching ideas, and regularly-updated job postings.

The English Club
Intended for both learners and teachers of English as a second language, this site was created in 1997 and has since grown into one of the largest ESL sites on the Web. The site's more than 7,000 pages include lessons on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation; quizzes, interactive games, and jokes; forums; and information on study abroad. Learners will also find a 24-hour ESL Help Desk with teachers available to answer questions. Teachers will find lesson plans, a newsletter, job ads, and a forum. Since it is based in Cambridge, England, the site emphasizes British English; however, it is a great tool for Americans too.

ESL Partyland
Provides many interactive quizzes, discussion forums and topic-based learning pages for students. On the teachers side, lessons and printable materials to use in class.

The British Council
Aims to connect people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK. Includes resources for teachers and students.

La Mansion del Ingles
This site is for Spanish speakers to learn English.  The site  includes courses, grammar, vocabulary, exercises, books, educational programs to download, and a wide and varied selection of supplementary material.

Using English
