nterlibrary Loan (ILL) services now include electric delivery of photocopies obtained from other libraries. Thanks to a grant from TASC (Technology Advancement Student Committee), the Odyssey electronic delivery e-mail system has been implemented for copies of articles requested through Interlibrary Loan. In the first four months of service, during the slower summer months, more than 100 articles were provided electronically, saving both paper and time.

Paul Drake, Interlibrary Loan Librarian, was the opening keynote speaker at the Wisconsin Interlibrary Loan annual meeting in Madison (10/2/07) ~ see photo below.

Paul Drake, Interlibrary Loan Librarian

Paul also co-presented at the New England Library Association Conference in Sturbridge, Massachusetts (10/15/07). Earlier (4/13/07), he made a presentation on evaluating and benchmarking ILL services to the Midwest Interlibrary Loan Conference in Dubuque, Iowa.

EDUCATOR AND HISTORIAN BENOIT DIES

The McNeese Archives and the Southwest Louisiana Historical Association lost a dear friend and supporter this summer with the death of Robert C. Benoit. Robert was an educator and historian who spent three decades with both the American Press and the Calcasieu Parish school system. He was the editor of the paper’s 50 Years Ago column and taught at LaGrange High School — his alma mater. He retired from LaGrange in 1987 after 30 years as a classroom teacher and from the American Press in 1995.

Local history was a passion for Robert, which is how he came to be such a good friend and supporter of the McNeese Archives. He was the editor of Images of America: Imperial Calcasieu, a picture history of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis parishes published by the Southwest Louisiana Historical Association and incorporating photographs from the archives and his private family collection. He wrote stories about Gerstner Field, a World War I airfield south of Lake Charles, and about the murder conviction and execution of Toni Jo Henry in 1942.

He worked with the Archives Department and the Historical Association on many projects, including the Levingston/Franks Historic Newspaper Collection; the Borealis Rex marker dedication; Gulf Biologic Station/Calcasieu River Lighthouse and Gerstner Field Historical Markers; and the 1998 Nostalgia calendar. Robert was a past president of the Southwest Louisiana Historical Association, which honored him in 2001 with the President’s Award.

HISTORIC LOUISIANA PHOTOGRAPHS

The LOUISiana Digital Library (LDL) serves as an online digital repository for over 65,000 digital materials about Louisiana’s history, culture, places, and people. Materials in the LDL are provided by 19 participating institutions, including libraries, archives, museums, and historical centers. Each institution, including McNeese, contributes the digital items and the descriptive text for their collections.

The purpose of the LDL is to make unique historical treasures from Louisiana institutions electronically accessible to Louisiana residents and the world. The collection contains photographs, maps, manuscript materials, books, and oral histories. Included is the Historic Photographs of Southwest Louisiana Collection, which documents McNeese State University, Lake Charles, and the Imperial Calcasieu region from the early 1890’s to present.  Approximately 3,000 photographs are included in this collection.

LOCAL HISTORY ACCESSIBLE ONLINE

The McNeese archives developed a project last year to post local history publications online. The project was funded by the Community Support Fund (2007). In this initial phase, 15 titles were placed online:

A Brief History of Calcasieu Parish
Early Annals of Beauregard Parish
Early Calcasieu Doctors 1850-1912
Economic & Social Development of Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, 1840-1912
Economic Development of Southwest Louisiana, 1865-1900
Growth and Development of the Lake Charles School System, 1920-1940
History of Education in Calcasieu Parish
History of Education in Lake Charles from 1907-1937
History of Education in Lake Charles Prior to 1907
History of Jennings, Louisiana
History of Lake Charles
Life and Services to Public Education of John McNeese
Niblett's Bluff in the War Between the States
Niblett's Bluff Wartime Timeline
Political Development of the City of Lake Charles, 1890-1930
SW LA Biographical & Historical (Calcasieu Parish & Cameron Parish)

These online publications are full-text books that are accessible through the library’s online catalog as well as through the Archives web site. The text of each book is keyword searchable – a very useful feature since none of these books are indexed.

The public response to this project indicates that it has been a great success.  It has also proved to be very useful to the Archives Department in its efforts to aid researchers.  In 2008, it is anticipated that additional titles will be added.

For more information, contact Kathie Bordelon, Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, at (337) 475-5734 or e-mail: archivesdept@mcneese.edu.

MULLER’S REOPENING

The McNeese Archives Department was pleased to be able to contribute to the grand rebirth of Muller’s Department Store.  Muller’s, a Lake Charles landmark for over a century, was recently renovated and reopened as Muller’s Lofts, an apartment and shopping complex. During the last two weeks of August, the American Press and KPLC-TV ran stories about the re-opening of the building including interviews with former employees and area residents who fondly reminisced about working and shopping there.  The Calcasieu Government Channel, CGOV, produced a 30-minute documentary that discussed the history of Muller’s Department Store and its importance to the area.

When the building was opened to the public for tours on Friday, Aug. 24, the first thing the crowds saw when entering the lobby was the famous escalator, the first in Southwest Louisiana. The second thing they saw was one entire wall covered with framed black and white photographs and newspaper clippings depicting Muller’s history. These were all from the Muller’s Collection in the archives.  The American Press credited the MSU Archives with many of the photographs that were used in the newspaper, and CGOV included the archives department in the credits of its documentary. Kathie Bordelon, Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, states “We are always so pleased when we are able to help with a project that has this kind of impact on the community.”

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA DAILY HISTORY

The McNeese Archives has created a new online resource to promote Southwest Louisiana’s rich history. The On This Day in Southwest Louisiana History web page consists of a calendar highlighting important events in SWLA history. The calendar contains at least one entry for each day of the year.

The bulk of the information included in the calendar came from a joint project between the McNeese Archives Department and the Southwest Louisiana Historical Association.  Researchers used the McNeese Archives’ extensive holdings of records, vertical files, photographs, and published resources to compile the entries.
