Ad*Access
A Duke University database of over 7,000 advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955. Ad*Access concentrates on five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II.

The industry's leading magazine.

The American Advertising Federation  
The Unifying Voice for Advertising. The AAF is a professional advertising association that binds the mutual interests of corporate advertisers, agencies, media companies, suppliers, and academia.

Associations

International Communication Association Online
Brings together academicians and other professionals whose interest focuses on human communication. Abstracts are maintained for articles from ICA journals, Human Communication Research, Journal of Communication, and Communication Theory.

National Association of Black Journalists
This site makes available press releases and position statements from the largest media association for people of color in the world.

National Communication Association
The NCA is a professional association whose purpose is to promote the study, criticism, research, and teaching of the principles of communication. The web site includes links to news bulletins, recent NCA journal articles, and related organizations and resources.

National Press Club
The club provides people who gather and disseminate news a center for the advancement of their professional standards and skills, the promotion of free expression, mutual support and social fellowship.

Public Relations Society of America
The PRSA is the world's largest professional organization for public relations practitioners. The Society's almost 20,000 members represent business and industry, counseling firms, government, associations, hospitals, schools, professional services firms and nonprofit organizations.

National Press Photographers Association
The NPPA is an organization dedicated to the advancement of photographic journalism. Members include still and television photographers, editors, students and representatives of businesses that serve the photojournalism industry. Links are available to workshop and job information.

Society of Professional Journalists
The SPJ is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Available here are information on ethics and the Freedom of Information Act.

Education

ACEJMC Online Information Center
The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, or ACEJMC, is the agency responsible for the evaluation of professional journalism and mass communications programs in colleges and universities. The website is divided into sections: the Student Information Center, the Program Information Center, an online newsletter, and, when necessary, a News section.

Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication 
An international association of more than 3,300 journalism/mass communication faculty, students, administrators, and professionals.  AEJMC is the oldest and largest association of journalism and mass communication educators and administrators at the college level.  Many links to high quality sites are available from this site.

Communication studies, cultural studies, media studies infobase
Mick Underwood provides a background for understanding all types of communication.. This site contains discussions of meaning and communication, learning and communication, basic communication models, perception, semiotics, and social systems.

The Newseum
A national Museum of News located in Washington DC. The website features superb online exhibits about both the history of journalism and the profession today.

American Demographics
Makes available back issues of the journal on a searchable site.  Consumer trends for business leaders, tactics and techniques f or information-based marketers, and forecasts of demographic trends are provided. Included are strategies on reaching specific groups.

Canadian Journal of Communication
A journal of research and scholarship encompassing the field of communication and journalism studies giving emphasis to Canadian work and Canadian issues.  Indigenous Television in Australia and Canada describes attempts by indigenous people to develop culturally appropriate television programs.

Columbia Journalism Review
Provides the journal online, including the current issue, an archive of articles since 1991, and resources for covering important subjects. 

Editor & Publisher Interactive
The online version of Editor & Publisher magazine, featuring top media-related news stories, an archive of back issues, and classified job listings.

Images: A Journal of Film and Popular Culture
This quarterly journal publishes articles about television, videos, and other popular visual arts.  It aims to analyze the relationship of film to the culture we live in.

Louisiana Press Association
Louisiana Press Association is the official trade organization for Louisiana newspapers.

Newspapers Online
Includes national, international, trade, and college newspapers available over the Internet.

Newspaper Archives on the Web
Listing of newspapers with back issues available on the Web.

Newspaper Association of America
NAA is a nonprofit organization representing the $54 billion newspaper industry. NAA members account for nearly 90% of the daily circulation in the United States and a wide range of non-daily U.S. newspapers.  The Association focuses on five  priorities: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development and newspaper operations. Hotlinks to over 1500 newspapers may be accessed.

Native Times Newspaper
Covers news and information of interest to Native Americans.

Radio and TV

American Indian Radio on Satellite (AIROS)
The (AIROS) network is a national distribution system for Native programming to Tribal communities and to general audiences through Native American and other public radio stations as well as the Internet. 

BBC Online
The British Broadcasting Corporation homepage presents programming, current information on news, sports, weather and links to information by and about the BBC.

ith selected content from Current, the biweekly newspaper that covers public TV and public radio in the United States.

Federal Communications Commission
Homepage of the policy maker for broadcasting and telecommunications. Includes press releases and updates on current policy issues.

Kill Your Television This Web site presents the hazards of television viewing.  It contains information on the Nielson lists of most watched programs and advertisements.

MIT List of Radio Stations on the Internet Links to 8000 radio stations around the world with a presence on the web. 

National Association of Broadcasters
Features information about current issues in broadcasting, research briefs, legal and legislative developments, and an employment clearinghouse.

PBS Online This searchable site from the Public Broadcasting Service presents educational programming and content. 

Television News Archive--Vanderbilt University
Online index to evening TV news broadcasts from the 1960's to the present.   This site does NOT include the full-text of the broadcasts, but provides abstracts for most items, which may be requested on loan.

Television and Radio News Research A systematic look at the people and institutions that bring you television and radio news in the United States is provided at this site from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. National surveys address such topics as newsroom profitability, salaries, staff diversity, careers and internships.

Reporting

The Drudge Report
Is it news, or is it just gossip? Matt Drudge's reporting has been the subject of national media controversy. The site includes links for notable columnists and reporters, as well as searches of newswire services.

Investigative Reporters and Editors IRE provides educational services to reporters, editors and others interested in investigative journalism and works to maintain high professional standards.  Links are maintained to NICAR National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting databases.

General Resources

ACA Center for Communication Studies Here the American Communication Association presents communication-related hyperlinks organized by subfields within the communication discipline. The goal is to provide a centralized index of web resources on Communication research and practice.

Communication Institute for Online Scholarship
Includes a resource library, white pages, and the Communication Concept Explorer, a research tool which searches a database of communication journal indexes. 

The Electronic Journalist
Resources from the Society of Professional Journalists, with emphasis on journalistic ethics and freedom of information.

FACSNET
Tips for journalists on finding data.  The section on Internet Resources is not the best, but other sections on Top Issues and Reporting Tools are quite helpful.   Requires registration before use.

Freedom of Information Act - U.S. Department of State Electronic Reading Room This site provides information on the Freedom of Information Act and documents released from the State Department under that act.

International Telecommunication Union The ITU, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland is an international organization within which governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services. It  publishes telecommunication technology, regulatory and standards information.

Kidon Media-Link A directory of newspapers and other news sources on the internet.  The directory is organized by continent, country, state.

Media Awareness Network: Statistics
From a Canadian organization, statistics dealing with media usage, industry, and content, including such issues as violence, the internet, minorities, and advertising.

MediaLink
Comprehensive listing of web sites for newspapers, television, and radio stations world wide.

NewsWatch: Views on the News NewsWatch's mission is to watch the media watchdog on behalf of news consumers, and to give a voice to consumers who want to talk back to the media. The goal is not to make the job of the journalist more difficult but to hold them to their profession's standards of fairness and accuracy.

The People The Press is an independent opinion research group, sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts, that studies public attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues.

Poynter.org The Poynter Institute for Media Studies presents Poynter.org to help journalists do their jobs better and to serve their communities. Updated daily, it provides journalists with reliable information, useful tools, and provocative suggestions. The site advances the goals of The Poynter Institute by making accessible worldwide its teaching, expertise, and research.

eLab Research for a Digital World Project 2000  studies the marketing implications of commercializing the World Wide Web. The Center conducts rigorous research on the strategic, consumer behavior, and policy issues related to the development of the Internet as a commercial medium. 

UNESCO CII - WebWorld UNESCO provides here materials on global programs for communication development.

Issues

Annenberg Washington Program in Communications Policy Studies is a  forum in the nation's capital for examining pressing communications policy issues. Links to many policy papers are available here.

Bad Subjects: Political Education for Everyday Life A website committed to analyzing the political dimensions of all aspects of everyday life.  Published monthly, it reveals the politics implicit in what lies outside of the world of politics.  Progressive analyses of politics, popular culture, race relations, war, conservation, money, etc., etc.

The Benton Foundation  is a Washington, D.C. public policy think tank working to realize the social benefits made possible by the public interest use of communications. Bridging the worlds of philanthropy, public policy, and community action, Benton seeks to shape the emerging communications environment and to demonstrate the value of communications for solving social problems.

Brookings Institution Policy Brief Chronological Archive A listing of the policy briefs from a Washington, D.C. think tank. Included are briefs on tax cuts, social security, telecommunications, telephone deregulation, the Euro, military preparedness and many more. The Brookings Institution functions as an independent analyst and critic, committed to publishing its findings for the information of the public.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation EFF is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working  to protect fundamental civil liberties, including privacy and freedom of expression, in the arena of computers and the Internet. EFF was founded in 1990.  News and articles on current issues are provided.   The Blue Ribbon Campaign for Online Free Speech seeks to protect online free speech. 

moving ideas The Electronic Policy Network A project of the American Prospect magazine.  It provides links to a number of public policy organizations as well as news releases and policy columns. The American Prospect presents liberal philosophy, politics, and public life.

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting FAIR, the national media watch group, presents this site, where you can find articles concerning media bias and censorship.  Subjects include gender, poverty, politics, think tanks, networks, and race.

FEMINIST.COM This site is devoted to women and women's issues. This searchable site is a starting point for finding feminist sources online.  Health, business, abuse, parenting, education, are among the links offered.

Freedom Forum The Freedom Forum is a foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people. The foundation pursues its priorities through conferences, educational activities, publishing, broadcasting, online services, fellowships, partnerships, training, research and other programs.

RAND is a California-based think tank and research center, working to influence policy and decision making. RAND has focused research on the nation's most pressing policy problems of   national security and domestic policy in efforts to strengthen the nation's economy, maintain its security, and improve its quality of life. E-Mail Communication Between Government and Citizens is one of RAND's issue papers, analyzing the need for secure communication.
