ACT vs. FICTION: ONLINE RESEARCH

McNEESE LIBRARY |  UNIVERSITY |  FRESHMAN ORIENTATION MATERIALS

FICTION:
Searching the Internet is the best place to start a research paper.

FACT:
The best place to start research is at the library, where you have help from librarians and access to all print and electronic resources available to you as a student.

FICTION:
Books, magazines, and newspapers will be made obsolete by the Internet.

FACT:
Only a small percentage of these sources are available online full-text.  Most newspapers and periodicals which are full-text have not converted all of their archival records, which means you cannot research older issues online.

FICTION:
If I don’t know anything about computers, I’ll have a hard time doing research in college.

FACT:
For computers, all you need are basic instructions on maneuvering a mouse and assistance in locating your library’s
web site. To conduct research, you need to master skills such as narrowing your topic, determining keywords appropriate for your topic, and locating resources which give you the best results.

FICTION:
If I use databases available through my university affiliation, I won’t need to go to the library.

FACT:
There are still many important books, periodicals, documents, and other resources available in the library which are not online.

FICTION:
I can assume that information is true if I find it on the Internet.

FACT:
Anyone can post anything they wish on their web page. It is up to you to decide whether it is accurate and reliable. Examine and
evaluate each source thoroughly.
